Kona Excursions & Ocean Adventures

  • Manta ray night snorkeling: A signature Kona excursion. Compare permitted operators, in-water guides, flotation options, cancellation policies and suitability for your swimming ability. Observe wildlife responsibly and never touch or pursue manta rays.
  • Kealakekua Bay boat and snorkel outings: Often chosen for clear water, reef life and coastal scenery. Confirm operating permissions, entry conditions and weather before booking.
  • Daytime snorkeling cruises: Look for smaller group sizes, quality equipment, flotation aids and clear briefings on entering and exiting the water.
  • Sunset boat excursions: A relaxing option for travelers who prefer to enjoy the Kona coastline without entering the water.
  • Seasonal whale watching: Winter is the principal humpback whale season in Hawaii. Choose responsible viewing operators and remember wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Snorkeling Locations & Safety

  • Kahaluʻu Beach Park: A popular snorkeling location near Kona; check local ocean conditions, lifeguard guidance and reef protection information.
  • Hōnaunau Bay (Two Step): Known for snorkeling off the rocky shoreline. Water entry can be difficult, so evaluate surf, footing and swimming ability. The snorkeling area is outside Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park; snorkeling within the sacred park grounds is discouraged.
  • Kealakekua Bay: A marine environment often visited on guided boat trips; review authorized access and safety guidance.

Ocean safety: Never snorkel alone, avoid rough water and strong currents, use appropriate flotation, and do not stand on coral. Avoid entering the water if conditions exceed your ability. Respect protected turtles, dolphins and other marine life. Review posted warnings and official ocean-safety guidance on the day of your visit.

Attractions, Culture & Scenic Drives

  • Historic Kailua Village and Aliʻi Drive: Explore Kona's waterfront, shops, local history and sunset scenery at a relaxed pace.
  • Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park: An important Hawaiian cultural and historical site south of Kona. Walk respectfully, check visitor hours, and allow time to understand its significance. Official information: National Park Service.
  • Kona coffee country: Visit coffee-growing areas in the uplands near Hōlualoa or Captain Cook; confirm farm tours before arriving.
  • Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park: An excellent longer outing for volcanic landscapes, trails and cultural interpretation. Check official alerts and current closures first. Storm damage in 2026 affected several trails and roads; do not rely on an old itinerary.
  • South Kona coastal viewpoints: Combine scenic stops with local cafés, short walks and cultural destinations while allowing for variable drive times.

Where to Eat in Kailua-Kona

These are research suggestions, not firsthand reviews or paid endorsements. Menus, hours, pricing and accessibility should be confirmed directly.

  • Umekes Fish Market Bar & Grill: Casual poke, seafood and Hawaiian-inspired dishes. Menu.
  • Kona Coffee & Tea: Farm-to-cup local coffee, light food and a convenient café stop.
  • Huggo's: An oceanfront choice for a special sunset dinner with seafood and other entrées.
  • Big Island Grill: Relaxed local-style comfort food, plate lunches and hearty breakfast/lunch options.
  • Fish Hopper Kona: Waterfront seafood and steak dining overlooking Kailua Bay.

Practical Planning

  • Getting around: A rental car is often useful for exploring beyond central Kona. Allow extra time for traffic, long distances and changing weather.
  • Where to stay: Central Kailua-Kona suits walkers seeking restaurants and waterfront access. Keauhou offers additional resort and vacation-rental choices. Check parking and resort fees before booking.
  • When to plan tours: Book popular manta ray and boat excursions in advance when appropriate, but allow flexibility for ocean conditions and cancellations.
  • What to pack: Sun protection, reusable water bottle, secure walking footwear, a light rain layer, reef-conscious sun protection and prescribed medications.
  • Accessibility and comfort: Ask tour operators about boarding steps, vessel stability, flotation assistance, restrooms and mobility accommodations. For parks and beaches, ask about uneven lava rock, accessible routes, shade and parking.
  • Responsible visiting: Respect sacred sites, stay on marked trails, avoid touching marine life and support local businesses.

Suggested Three-Day Kona Starter Plan

  1. Day 1: Explore Kailua Village and Aliʻi Drive, sample Kona coffee and enjoy a waterfront dinner.
  2. Day 2: Choose a guided snorkeling outing or a shore-based coastal experience; consider a manta ray excursion if ocean conditions allow.
  3. Day 3: Visit coffee country and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau, or reserve the day for a longer island excursion.
